Baby Needs and Wants

I did something silly. I created an Amazon.com baby registry for Baby-button. It can be found here.

For starters, I’m really drooling over this woven wrap and think it’d be a great way to carry the baby around in the summer heat and warm fall. (If you’re looking to splurge on me and the baby, order Size B, please! 😉 )

I didn’t add many clothes to the Wish List, mostly because we won’t know baby’s gender until s/he is born. Last night, I sorted through all the baby clothes and laid out the newborn to 3 month sizes and realized I badly need more summer clothes. A lot of my rompers are fleece and that just won’t do in this heat! We probably have enough onseis, but certainly not enough rompers/shorts/light pants. For summer (and always, really), I really want to dress the baby in 100% cotton or light wools; no polyester because it doesn’t breathe.

Toys – I have a very strong preference for natural toys (wood, cloth, etc) over plastics and synthetics. Really don’t need my new baby exposed to more chemicals than are necessary for as long as I can help it. You’ll get an idea of what I have in mind from the wish list, although obviously Amazon doesn’t have everything.

What else? Mostly just your love and support, which we already have and thank you for!

It’s hard to believe the count down to the big (estimated) due date is 7 days! It could be as long as another 21, but I have a feeling we’ll be meeting this new little person in the next two weeks. And I’m soooo excited!!

Nesting or simply organizing?

I have been terribly neglectful of my lovely baby-blog and have no excuse other than I’ve been busy!

This will be my fourth week home on maternity leave. I have been busying myself with last minute baby purchases, laundering and preparing cloth diapers and baby clothes, and finding homes for things like those adorable baby clothes (because they can’t live in storage forever!). I’ve also been busy spoiling my husband by cooking him breakfast nearly every morning I’ve been home, preparing his lunches, and arranging or making dinner. And since I’ve decided little Howeberry will be rooming in with us for at least the first 3 months, Jason has more time to work on the nursery (more on that story later).

So what does all this organizing look like?

Basically it looks like a book shelf that’s been converted into a dresser:

The mess of clothes on top are my maternity clothes, since they do not fit into my own dresser and are best kept separate.

The bottom two shelves are bins ready to cover baby’s butt, literally. The very bottom two are filled to the brim with cloth diapers, neatly folded and waiting to be used.

The bins above contain prep items such as cream and wipes: disposable for taking care of newborn meconium and cloth for the easier to clean poop that baby will be producing later. And probably my favorite thing I’m waiting to use on baby is in the bin next to the prep-bin, which are my lovely diaper covers. In particular, my wool diaper covers. These are only water resistant due to the lanolin they’ve been prepped with, but they are so very soft! I probably will not be able to use them until baby’s cord falls off, but they are ready and waiting until that time.

The top row of baskets is full of those beautiful baby clothes we’ve been collecting, whether on our own or from our wonderful friends and family. Particular items have been set on top to identify them as baby’s first outfit.

Everything is clean and ready whenever Howeberry is ready.

And then there is the rest of the stuff. It’s still very much in an organized mess in the living room. Car seat included (which, at 5 days until my due date, should really be in the car, but we have time. Right?). The cradle is still in the three boxes they shipped in from Mom and Dad. The rocking chair is also still in the basement and the cushion covers still need to be cleaned.

But somehow, I’m not too concerned.

My help will be here next week to assemble the cradle and move the last items to our bedroom. The stack of baby books will someday have a home in the baby room. And hopefully we’ll find a suitable place for the stroller, which may end up being the back of a car. We have oodles of blankets, most of which have been washed, along with the baby towels. Again, they just need a home.

All this cleaning and organizing has taken place over the last several weeks.

However, I would say I had one day of a primal sort of nesting since I’ve been home. That was last week when I took Windex to my kitchen and discovered: how clear and reflective I can make the windows in my back door; how white the back door actually is; and how reflective the black microwave  and dishwasher can become.

Friends Rock!

A lot has happened since my last post. We’ve flown to Seattle and back twice, which allowed for some quality family time. The second trip was oddly more relaxing than the first even though I was in town for work. The best part was spending time with my mom to listen baby stories, going through old baby pictures and seeing my baby book.

The first piece of immediately useful advise I received was from our first trip out in May, when I saw my favorite hair stylist for a trim. Her advise was how to continue wearing pre-pregnancy pants long after they stop closing. Her technique involves looping a rubber band around the button hole of your pants, then using the open loop to secure the button to hold the pants closed. Like this:

This has totally allowed me to continue to wear my pre-pregnancy dress pants to work. I’ll also throw on a bella band to cover the gap in my pants. It may not be necessary, but I’d much rather feel like my pants aren’t going anywhere or exposing me, especially in a professional setting!

About a month ago (probably more at this point) a good friend offered to lend me her maternity clothes. On the phone it sounded like she had one box of clothes. When we met up, it turned out to be two boxes packed full clothes. Among the many shorts, pants, shirts and dresses are items that can even be worn to work! I am, however, most excited about the bella band and swimsuits that were found in the boxes.

The bella band will probably get the most use. These things are awesome. If you don’t know what it is, look it up. A bella band is a simple tube of stretchy fabric that is warn over the hips and tummy to cover what shirts and pants can no longer reach. Oddly, they easily cost $30 each, which just feels like robbery because they’re so simple.

The swimsuits mean I can stop scouring the Internet looking for something decent to wear to the Shore this summer. Somehow I don’t think my friends would appreciate it if I exposed my growing belly by wearing a bikini this summer 🙂

Speaking of tummies, mine has been rounding out faster these days. Definitely showing now, although I’ve had people comment that you can’t hardly tell. Just at 22 weeks now and we’ve crossed over the half way point – 18 weeks or so to go. Can you believe Thanksgiving is only four months away?!
